Hair styles vary from shaved heads to Mohawks, curls to extensions and everything in between. On TV, there are countless commercials dealing with hair from overcoming baldness to eliminating gray, and hip new hair colors to special shampoos guaranteed to make your hair its best.
Why do people care about their hair so much?
According to cnn.com, Dr. Marianne Lafrance, psychology professor at Yale University, “the usual assumption is that the twinkle of the eye, the length of the nose, the cleft in the chin actually affects first impressions. But in fact, hair styles totally swamped those effects.”
Taji Bacus, hair stylist and owner of Taji’s Salon, said, “Hair plays a major role in one’s appearance, it can make you look younger, older, sexy, or professional. It tells a lot about a person. Hair has no age. It makes you feel good, and it expresses how you act.” Bacus has been a hair dresser for 16 years. He believes a lot of people imitate celebrity hair, but most young people get their preferred hairstyle from others on the streets. Stylists work with these “street hair styles” and elaborate on them.
You may waste time, or you may dress up to go somewhere important; in any event, your hair plays a big role in your personality, according to Bacus.
Bacus said flat/straight hair and wavy hair are in for women.
Short and medium length hair are in for men.
Perms and chunky weaves are on their way out.
Edgar Casillas, a business major has had his hair long for two years. “I keep my hair long to get the ladies,” said Casillas.
There are many different hairstyles; some are new and others have been around for a while.
“I shaved my head for Halloween. It’s a bit more comfortable, but it doesn’t matter to me. I’m not too picky, said James Craig, computer information systems major. “It takes me 15 minutes to straighten my hair in the morning,” said Jessica Toledo, a pre-med major, who wears her hair straight.
