At Stramler Park on September 10, the public will get a
chance to interact with the athletes of Bakersfield College
at the annual BC BBQ, which is put on by the BC Alumni
Association.
This event will be $20 for the general public and will include
either a steak or chicken plate. There will also be children’s
tickets available for $5. Tickets may be purchased at
the gate.
The 55th annual BBQ will showcase some of the college’s
best coaches as they share some insight on the upcoming
season.
This event has been a part of BC’s athletic program for
quite some time.
“The BC BBQ was going on when I played here in 1969,”
said Jan Stuebbe, BC’s athletic director. “The format has
changed. It used to just be football and it used to be all men.
Over the years we’ve evolved to where we include all of the
fall and winter sports, male and female.”
Stuebbe also raved about the food prepared by BC’s Culinary
Arts program headed by Chef Pat Coyle.
“It’s great steak and just a lot of fun,” Stuebbe said.
According to Stuebbe, BC is the only junior college in the
state that gives the community an opportunity to dine with
the local student-athletes.
The locations have changed over the years as well, previously
being held at Hart Park, the Fairgrounds, and private
houses.
Out of all of the previous locations for this event, Stramler
Park is a little more centralized, and easier for fans and
the general public to attend the event.
“The student athletes will go out and mingle and sit with
the community,” said BC’s kicking coach Lorenzo Alvarez.
“When it’s done, the athletes will actually bus the tables.”
Lorenzo Alvarez is in his 23rd year as BC’s kicking coach
and is the most tenured coach on the football staff.
Entertainment will be provided by The Tony Ernst Band,
whose members are alumni of Bakersfield College.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner is served from 6-8
p.m.
All proceeds support the scholarship and athletic programs
at BC.
