As of July 1, Bakersfield College
has a new interim dean of students. Jan
Stuebbe, who is also the athletic director
for the college, has replaced temporary
dean Angela Guadian-Mendez.
“There’s a real need for a full-time
dean,” Stuebbe explained.
This is the second time that Stuebbe
has stepped in as temporary dean; the
last time was about a year ago when
BC was between deans.
Stuebbe and Mildred Lovato, vice
president of Student Services, have
come together as “team deans” to concentrate
on all areas of student affairs.
Lovato focuses on the disciplinary issues
while Stuebbe works with the
SGA and clubs on campus.
“It definitely keeps me busier than I
was,” he said.
“I got my golf cart out to get places
quicker.”
Along with Lovato, training was set
up over the summer break for members
of SGA to attend along with weekly
meetings throughout the semester.
Stuebbe also said they have plans for
homecoming week, which starts Oct.
26.
Although this job comes with more
responsibility, Stuebbe said that it is a
positive experience.
“I enjoy working with SGA. It’s an
opportunity for me to work directly
with students, which is the reason why
37 years ago I got into education,” he
said.
