The Wylie and May Louise Jones Gallery in the Bakersfield College library is featuring the LA Artcore Artists exhibit.
Some of the artists whose works are featured attended the opening reception on Oct. 15.
Ramone Muñoz has three paintings hung in the gallery, “Towers of Vick II,” “Towers of Vick III” and “Towers of Vick IV.” Muñoz said that his current work is inspired by archaeology and geology. He was inspired to paint the towers after taking a trip to the south of Iceland.
“The Towers of Vick are rock formations off the coast. They’re quite amazing,” Muñoz explained. “The legend is that the towers were trolls. If they don’t get back to their cave before sunrise, they turn to stone.”
Muñoz’s three paintings reflect the legend.
Joyce Kohl has five sculptures in the gallery. She said that her materials and things that concern her are what inspire her artwork.
Her piece “Checks and Balances” was inspired by the government.
“Things don’t actually change,” Kohl said.
Margaret Nowling is the curator of the gallery. She said that she enjoys listening to what people have to say about the art.
“I enjoy watching people respond to the art,” Nowling said.
She likes that some of the artists came from LA for the opening of the show.
“It’s good for people who look to talk to the artists,” Nowling explained. “Sometimes it’s not apparent what the work means. It’s a richer experience for viewers.”
Jorge Rodriguez, 23, went to the gallery “to compare different artists and their expressions through different mediums.”
Kohl, who teaches sculpture and ceramics at Cal State Bakersfield, said that it’s a nice connection to have her artwork displayed in the BC gallery.
“I know a lot of people at BC, and I teach at CSUB.”
Muñoz teaches communication and graphic design at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He said that he came to the opening of the gallery because it’s impossible for him not to like college students and to see them exposed to different kinds of ideas and work is enjoyable.
Munoz added, “If someone can learn something, great!”
The LA Artcore Artists gallery will be displayed until Nov. 19 and also features art from Jon Nguyen, Mark Strickland and Robert Walker. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
