BC set the year off with free coffee and donuts on Monday, Aug.26 and Tuesday, Aug.27 for students walking into their first days of school. All campuses of Bakersfield College had this celebratory event to get students and staff excited for what is to come for this upcoming semester.
The event was very accessible for the reason that there were many tents with the supplies and treats in various different spots on the Panorama campus so it seemed almost impossible to just walk by. Many students walking onto campus made a quick stop to receive their exciting treats and many seemed to leave for their classes looking delighted.
When asked about the coffee and donuts, executive secretary, Rita Jones said “They’re flying pretty fast so they’re pretty good.” Showing how successful the two days of coffee and donuts really were. Not only were there delicious treats, but a helpful tool that students or staff can use throughout the school year to stay organized, a Bakersfield College planner! A great way to stay on top of school work and extracurricular activities, and not feel as overwhelmed especially for students who are new this semester at BC.
The welcome tents weren’t just filled with a quick snack and refreshment but also filled with smiles, laughter, questions, and answers. Students who found themselves lost were considerably able to ask where their class was located, and they were directed thoroughly. Although the first couple of days may have been nerve wracking for some, the welcome tents had an inviting and comforting vibe.
“I really like all the energy back on campus, when I first started it was right after Covid, things were kind of slow to pick up and I just like everything being busy, I look forward to it, it’s awesome,” says Rita. Due to the unfortunate events of Covid, things were slowly and surely getting back to normal.
Talking to friends, professors, staff, or new people was something that was kind of hard to do a year ago for most, but because of events like the welcome tents; it gives people an olive branch to reconnect as a society and rebuild what was once lost within the generation.
