Flics celebrated its 25th season, held at the Fox Theater in downtown Bakersfield, on Friday.
Flics is Bakersfields international cinema society, run by local volunteers.
The doors opened at 6:30 and everyone was invited in for wine and horderves before the movie started.
The first movie of the season was “Tristram Shandy: A Cock & Bull Story,” by director Michael Winterbottom. The film stars Steve Coogan, who plays two characters in the movie and he also plays himself.
That may sound a bit confusing, however, the movie is a satire about the difficulties of making a movie, so there is a movie within a movie.
In the movie, the movie they are trying to make is based on an 18th century novel called “Tristram Shandy,” that proves to be completely impossible.
Coogan plays himself, an actor, starring in this very difficult movie as the lead actor.
Coogan has to fight many battles during the production of the movie within the movie.
From his constant rants with the wardrobe department about making his shoes taller so that he could be taller than his co-star, to the reporter who has recently discovered some dirt on him, which would not go over well with his girlfriend and mother of his child.
During a screening of the movie within the movie, they realize that they do not have enough material and they need to select additional scenes from the book to add.
They decide on the scene they would like to add and they discuss adding a big Hollywood star to play the part.
They decide to cast Gillian Anderson from “X-Files,” Anderson agrees and flies out right away to shoot her scenes, only to have all of her scenes cut out.
The movie is really funny and worth watching. “Tristram Shandy: A Cock & Bull Story” is available on DVD.
The experience of watching these great movies on a big screen in the beautiful Fox Theater is well worth the $4 a person it costs to get in.
It is nice to shake things up and do something different in Bakersfield.
Each Flics movie is only shown once so if you miss it, you miss it.
The next movie will be on Friday, and the film that will be showing is “Tsotsi.” For the entire list of films and their scheduled dates, you can visit www.flics.org.
