Black History Month, is the time set aside to celebrate and recognize the achievements and accomplishments of African Americans. Yet here on the Bakersfield College campus there was no such recognition and Black History Month passed by pretty much uneventful.
The reason given by Matthew Jenkins, president of African American Student Union was planning on having a Black Culture Day with food and bands, but was postponed to a later date, due to the fact that the club has not come together enough to agree on the things they want to do. Jenkins also said that he wants the club to be more established or on a more solid footing. So events like Black Culture Day were postponed until April.
Sierra Dawson, 19, a nursing major was very disappointed that there were no activities for Black History Month. Dawson said that she attended the Black History parade downtown but would have much rather seen something done on campus.
BC student David Edwards, stated that all around him are activities going on and off campus, so he’s not disappointed. It’s going to be celebrated regardless.
A criminal justice major, Keishonia Pollard, 19, attended the Black History parade, and her mom had a party to celebrate Black History Month. but Pollard would have loved to have seen something on campus.
