The Majestic Fox Theater in downtown Bakersfield
was packed Aug. 27 as fans awaited Brian
Regan. Nearly every row of the 1,600-seat theater
was full as Brian’s brother, Dennis Regan, took to
the stage to open for him. As the last of the stragglers
took their seats, Dennis went through a short
comedy routine in which he relayed his experience
so far in Bakersfield.
Dennis kept the audience laughing and the technical
staff on their toes by insisting “please more
feedback, more feedback” whenever problems
with sound would occur. After about 20 minutes
Dennis introduced his brother to applause.
Brian Regan’s stand up routine dealt with real
life situations such as parenthood, aging, and
health as well as a variety of topics ranging from
troublemaking sports fans to the heroic flight of
Captain Sullenberger. A few audience members
were doubled over in their seats shaking from uncontrollable
laughter.
Hannaly Edwards, 18, a longtime fan of Regan
found out about this performance through her
mother and father who attended the performance
with her this year and when he came to Bakersfield
last year. She was very excited to hear his
new material and was very happy to find out he
was coming to Bakersfield again.
“He talks about everyday occurrences and he’s
very clean.”
She said what made his act stand out for her
compared to other comedians was his enthusiasm
and lack of profanity. “He’s my favorite comedian
by far,” Edwards said.
When asked if she felt comfortable watching
Regan with her parents she simply replied “of
course,” a sentiment her parents expressed as
well.
Due to the clean nature of his routine, Regan’s
fans come in a variety of ages. Parents find they
are more comfortable bringing their children to
see him because he can be funny without being
vulgar.
For his encore performance, Regan interacted
with the audience taking requests and doing some
of his previous routines. When the show ended
the audience slowly filed out, laughing and quoting
their favorite parts to their neighbors along the
way.
