The National Hot Rod Association held its 18th annual California Hot Rod Reunion presented by Automobile Club of Southern California at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Famoso, Ca (12 miles north of Bakersfield) on Oct. 16-18.
According to the NHRA’s Executive Director Tony Thacker, the event saw an estimated 10,000 people per day for a total of an estimated 30,000 plus.
The Reunion had its fair share of disturbances according to Sgt. Shaun Beasley of the Kern County Sheriff’s Department.
“There were a couple burglaries of vehicles in the parking lot last night, [Saturday night] but again when you have 10,000 plus people in the same place and then you add alcohol, some folks just act up a little bit.”
Most people just had a good time with friends and family.
According to Pat Townsend, “It was a good time. My family comes every year, but I haven’t been here in about five years, so I’m excited to be here.”
Randy Timmoms said he was there for “cars and the camaraderie.”
Rob Stephens had joined Timmoms after driving 850 miles for 13 hours, all for the Reunion.
Stephens said of the trip, “It was well worth it. I love coming to the Reunion and the March Meet.”
Stan Cancliff talked about the tradition in NHRA and how it’s the only place where you can “find Hall of Famers in the grandstands and walking around with the fans and everyday people.”
Cancliff mentioned it was fun meeting drivers and crewmembers.
