“Walk on Water” was a new attraction at the Kern County Fair that goes along with this year’s “It’s Magic” theme. It consisted of at least six balls inside of a rectangular pool filled with water.
There was no age limit set on the hamster-like inflated balls, which were large enough to fit a person. The weight limit was 440 pounds, so most people could enjoy walking across the water, as long as all 10 rules are followed.
Rules like, “You must enter headfirst and sit on the edge of the plastic pool, facing the water,” and, “exit the ball feet first.” In this position it allows the workers to fill the bubble with an air hose pump for riders to float on the water with their weight.
There was a small crowd around the pool as a few children were in line to get in the balls, but once they were rolling around in the water, more people walked up and began watching or participating.
A very excited fair goer got inside the ball and made it a little more interesting when he began falling and rolling around the entire pool.
“I’ve seen it on the commercial, and it looked like so much fun so I came to try it out. It was extremely fun! I would definitely like to do it again next year if it’s here,” Erik Roque, 22, said.
Each person is able to be in the ball for four to five minutes before they start to take in carbon dioxide. So the attendants time it, and toward the end of the run go into the pool and collect the balls for deflation.
The way the ball was made, there is a chance of actually getting wet when the side of the ball with the zipper dipped into the water, but the ball was considered safe.
