A retired Condors goalie, now chief correspondent for “E! News,” Ken Baker held a book signing at Barnes and Noble for his new book “Fangirl.” The book is a work of fiction that hit stores on Nov. 16.
Baker, who played as a goalie for the Condors during the 2001-2002 season, has a special place in his heart for Bakersfield.
“It’s like a temple (Rabobank Arena). I lived my dreams there,” he said. “I was the oldest rookie on the team, but everyone was just great. I enjoyed my time here. That’s why I feel Bakersfield was a perfect setting for my book. I wanted the small town fee,l and Bakersfield fit that perfectly.
“I’m weird, I just pursue my interest. I love the freedom to create. I still play hockey for fun and working for ‘E! News’ and now a fictional writer.”
The event drew a very-diverse crowd varying in age, ranging from hockey fans to entertainment fans alike. Niki Reyes from the “Morning show with Danny and Niki” on Kelly 95.3 was in attendance.
“He has my dream job, there was no way I was going to miss this. That, and I get my book signed. On my show I do an entertainment segment and I watch ‘E! News’ all the time. He’s just so humble and nice easy to talk to,” said Reyes.
Also in attendance were Terri and Tami Iascome, who were caller number nine for a contest put on by Kelly 95.3. They won a free copy and had to come down to Barnes and Nobles to receive it.
“I didn’t even know he used to play for the Condors,” said Terri Iascome. “My mom won the book, and we only called in because if you take a signed copy of the book to the Condors game tonight we get a free mug and Condors bookmark.”
Terri’s mother Tami was equally surprised.
“Were such huge fans of the Condors,” she said. “We’ve gone to every home game since 2003. It was just meant to be. It’s like fate brought us here.”
