Bakersfield College unveiled the new Veteran’s Plaza located in in the center of campus. The ribbon cutting ceremony for the new veteran plaza was held the morning of Aug. 31.
The speaker of the house Kevin McCarthy, mayor Karen Goh and many other numerous leaders attended as well as fellow veterans and BC students showing appreciation and support.
Marine Evan Morgan who sadly lost both of his legs while serving sang the national anthem at the event. Jenny Frank, manager of veteran services and programs, then spoke briefly.
The idea of veteran’s plaza originated years ago, with the purpose of adding a monument recognizing and honoring veterans on campus.
There are five pillars for the five branches of the United State Military: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Airforce and Coast Guard. Veterans and students were invited to help summarize the history of these pillars and capture the spirit of each branch’s mission, birth, and model.
McCarthy spoke briefly saying, “…our freedoms are not free they are the responsibility of those who are willing to serve their country.”
A U.S Veteran who served in the Airborne division and is also a fellow renegade Justin Floss said, “We welcome you home.”
The plaza strives to be a place of inspiration, recognition, support and gratitude to students, especially for the graduates who go on to serve, who know it will always be a reminder of the support BC holds for them.
As the main event neared its end, a Kern County Fire Department helicopter flew over the ceremony and attendees.
The Rip encourages you to come out and visit the New Veterans Plaza to learn, honor and respect those who fight for the country’s freedom.
