Bakersfield College will be holding its 7th annual Panorama Creative Music Summit later this September. The Performing Arts Department presents this free public concert to showcase many musical acts. Visiting artist Tatsuya Nakatani and his directing of students in a performance of his 16-piece Nakatani Gong Orchestra will be featured, as well as Prof. James Sproul’s leadership of an orchestra of students and faculty for a performance of composer Terry Riley’s minimalist piece called “In C”. The new BC Improvisation Ensemble will be performing music by Pauline Olivers, an American composer who led the way in experimental and electronic music.
The concert will be a uniquely inspired one, involving students from all of BC’s music programs. New and Original music will be performed by both visiting and local performers, as well as BC faculty, students, and even alumni. In years past, the Commercial Music program’s Live Sound class would run sound for the event, but Professor Timothy Heasley, Director of Marching Arts Ensembles and Performing Arts Chair (who teaches Live Sound), stated that because Live Sound is a late-start class this year, those students will not be involved in working the event. Those interested in more information can email Professor Kris Tiner, Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies (and the one who is running the summit) at [email protected].
The summit concert will be held September 21, 2023 at 7p.m. in the Simonsen Performing Arts Center on campus.
