On National Coming Out Day, Oct 11. The Consent Project Club held a trans clothing swap and up cycle. The event was held at Bakersfield College’s main campus in the Renegade Crossroads area.
Tables were set up with shoes and accessories. Racks of clothing were nearby. All the items were made available for free for anyone who showed up. There were no requirements for taking any number of items chosen.
In addition to clothing and accessories buttons and stickers were offered for free. Many of them held lifestyle positive and gender confirming quotes.
To help support the mission of the event, which was to give trans students access to clothing of their gender to aid in self-expression, fabric markers were also provided to take the personalization of the clothing up a notch. Recipients could decorate clothing to their style and liking.
The event is held each semester and the next one upcoming is in March.
The Consent Project Club teaches healthy boundaries and healthy relationships. It meets Mondays from 3 – 4p.m. in the Campus Center Student Life and by Zoom. It is overseen by Adrianna Oceguera, Prevention Education Specialist in the Office of Student Life.
