Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with the first event of the week on Sept.16. Where they honor the Hispanic culture and celebrate together within the community. BC held an event where they brought out the President of BC Dr. Jerry E Fliger, Program Manager Johnny Nieto, and Professor Olivia Garcia, Councilor Manuel Rosas which they spoke on regards of Hispanic Heritage Month. For music & entertainment, there was Marachi mi Ciudad, the group Folkloric Ritmo y Sabor, and Aztec Dancers. The Hispanic Heritage Committee was the organizer of the event including future ones.
There was food that provided a taste of Hispanic culture with an appetizer bar. From all sorts of countries starting with Spain they had croquetas; which are deep-fried balls with mashed potato and filling, then representing El Salvador there were pupusas a unique touch of purple cabbage, Mexico had tamales de elote, there were three types of desserts starting with a churro with chocolate drizzle and strawberries, a fried banana, and one more representing Hispanic desserts. There was also a variety of fresh fruit available.
It was such a big turnout of events with people showing up and supporting they even ran out of food and went for more.
Within the Hispanic culture, everyone celebrates differently since there are many diversities within the community. Therefore, celebrations that some do like BC students Kassandra Espinoza & Erika Rodriguez said, “Get together and make food along with families and then for the day of dead dance and celebrate.”
Vice President of Student Services Dr. Cesar Jimenez said, “There will be next spring an event Screening a movie a million miles away starting called Jose Hernandez a Mexican American who through all obstacles became the first astronaut.” That is how he will celebrate Hispanic culture.
Being Hispanic or Latino is a big part of being hardworking with honor and a dedicated citizen. Espinoza and Rodriguez said, “I am proud of our culture and expressing it, not feeling ashamed.”
Dr. Jimenez said, “Remembering & honoring our ancestors, many of us are first generations and many of our fathers and mothers came from different countries that came for better dreams.”
This is the first event of many that are going to be held annually, and it went well with a huge crowd of BC students coming and everyone supporting enjoying their time with music and food and listening.
Many events will happen throughout the month to celebrate Hispanic heritage.
