Lavender Pride had to two events on Sept. 18, including a clothing swap and a how to professionally dress. The clothing swap, which started three years ago, focused on providing clothing for people who need gender-conforming clothing that they are comfortable with wearing. Or people could even donate clothes they don’t wear.
Students come from out of high school and might not have the clothing they need, according to Adrianna Oceguera, the Student Identity and Sexual Misconduct Education Liaison at BC.
“The point of Clothing Swap is that people should not be uncomfortable to wear clothes that fit them,” said Oceguera. “Bakersfield College is a safe space to be yourself and to dress the way you want to be.”
Ocegura continued her statement by saying “Lavender Pride provides clothing for them and [the chance to] swap out their old clothes for new ones. The whole point is to provide clothing for the trans community and having the clothing that represent themselves. Not having to worry about their clothes and focusing more on schoolwork and not worried on what they are wearing or looking like”.
The second event, which was How to Professional Dress which was about how to dress for important interview or events. “People who haven’t been taught how to wear makeup or what to wear and finding the proper clothing,” Oceguera said.
This can include, “maybe having a nice collar or nice slacks.”
In addition to dressing for success Oceguera offered advice for those who wish to clarify their pronouns in an interview setting. She explained that it is important to respect peoples’ pronouns, but if you make a mistake then apologize and use the correct pronouns.
