On Oct 2 Bakersfield College held a drag workshop in honor of Queer History month allowing students to learn the glitz and glam of all things drag. Whether it was makeup, performance or even the hair that you’re interested in, this workshop had all.
The workshop was hosted by Alexander the Queen diva, also known as the bearded barbie of Bakersfield, along with Pheobe D’Monroe who was also crowned Miss Casablanca 2016-2017. The two queens made a presentation showcasing the ins and outs of being a drag artist, explaining the art form that embodies self-expression. They led a slideshow explaining all the concepts of drag, how to start off and giving advice on makeup, hair and performance.
“Just have fun and express yourself, there is no boundaries when it comes to drag,” said Alexander
The two queens explained that drag can be very competitive and freeing. It allows you to channel your inner self while also displaying a beautiful art form to the world. There are no limits when it comes to drag, being authentically what you want and who you are is a key aspect of drag.
“Drag is not always safe” Phobe stated.
Pheobe D’Monroe made highlights of the importance of keeping yourself safe. Unfortunately drag can be dangerous at times, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and be mindful of the people around you.
Drag allows the artist to be free and create, Pheobe D’Monroe who works at the local fabric store F&M fabrics explained how she creates her outfits from just a piece of fabric. If you have any questions regarding fabric for drag or just creating clothing in general, you are encouraged to visit F&M Fabrics to meet with Pheobe.
Doing drag because you love it, is the most important concept of drag. If you don’t love what you do it will not be worth it as you continue. It is important to note drag is not always safe, not cheap and not always fun. Having the passion to do drag comes with the good and the bad. If you have an interest in drag, the best advice is just do it.
