The two-day event known as “Day of the Dead” (Dia De Los Muertos) brings the living and the dead together. In order to pay tribute to their deceased family members, families make ofrendas, or offerings. Bright flowers, pictures of their loved ones, the person being honored, and favorite foods and beverages are used to decorate these shrines.
As the deceased hear their prayers, smell their food, and partake in the events, it is said that the offerings will entice visitors from the realm of the dead. The Day of the Dead is a unique occasion to honor both life and death. It is not like any other holiday where joy makes way for sorrow. Families gather around and eat food and drink to celebrate their deceased loved ones.
