New Exhibits opened at the Bakersfield Museum of Art on Friday, January 31. Four interesting and different exhibits started off the museum’s winter season: Kelly Berg’s Illuminated Earth, Works from the BMOA’s Collection called the Vault, Luciana Brait’s Fractured Geographies, and Modern Moments, abstract works from the BMOA’s Collection.
Illuminated Earth was an open space concept with a simplicity that lets you enjoy the art. The art uses light and dimensions to give you a different view of nature. The exhibit encases nature and its depth, giving you natural dimensions and angles that aren’t commonly seen. A key piece of the exhibit would have to be the pyramid in the middle of the room, while not large, the piece was an interesting center point of the exhibit.
The Vault had a simplicity and regalness to it because of its size. The exhibit was short and sweet, with the art being displayed beautifully on a wall. The exhibit could easily be a glance or passed by unknowingly, but once found and examined the art pieces are exquisite and very interesting to see.
Fractured Geographies is an exhibit by the artist, Luciana Abait, that encompasses your view on a road trip. Many of the pieces in the exhibit are from the artist’s series called Road Trip. While your view on a road trip tends to have the basic colors of nature while driving, especially in the Midwest, the art is very colorful and eye-catching, as the contrast of the colors works together to create a simple experience of a road trip.
Modern Moments from the BMOA’s collection was a walk down a cultural road. The exhibit was a nice change of pace with its fun and history mixture. The art is from different artists and times, all telling a different story in time. It was amusing to see a new feeling or experience every painting. It’s a literal walk down history, the paintings being on the walls of a hallway for you to stroll through and appreciate.
