Professors Reggie Williams and Kyle Burnham hosted the 6th annual “Deep Cuts and Conversation” event at the Panorama campus inside the Levan Center on Wednesday, April 9. This series is held three times each semester on the second Wednesday of the month.
Students were able to display their emotions and mindsets throughout the music they connected with in front of other students who shared the same hardships as well.
Philosophy professor, Reggie Williams, targets the focus of bringing students together onto the Bakersfield College campus. Williams stated, “The idea is people who care about music on whatever level come together, talk about the sounds, history, culture, words, and if they play music as well that’s cool too.” This event creates a safe space for students to open up in their own way of comfort. Music can provide comfort for students by filling the room with open conversation and thoughts from one’s feelings about certain parts of the song and applying it to their lives.
Not only does Professor Williams want to connect with students through the series, but he also has a larger goal at stake for students to have a greater college experience.
Professor Williams adds, “At BC, students come to school, do their classes and go home. Same thing with faculty as well. If you were at Cal State Chico, there’s a college vibe with energy. That’s my goal. The hope is to give students a little bit of a sense that college is just not that classroom, there’s more to it. The idea is to give them that broader sense of what college can be.”
Giving students that actual college experience is what’s powered behind the ‘Deep Cuts and Conversation’ series, which is only the start to uplift students to higher spirits when coming to campus to eventually having a legitimate college experience that big colleges have. Students can connect together so they don’t have to face challenges alone. Creating new friendships is what college is about, while also trying to achieve their academic goals. Creating bonds with one another will benefit students in all kinds of ways when students come together in the college community.
