Despite low attendance, Spring Fling was a success, said Andrew Bickers, director of student activities at Bakersfield College.
“I try never to equate a successful event with numbers of participation,” Bickers said. “As long as some had a great time, I think it was a success.”
Spring Fling, which was held March 18-22, featured many games and prizes during the week, which also included performances by local bands such as 3 Cent Nickel.
The event was capped off by Dr. Walter Packard, district chancellor, getting wet in the dunk tank.
“When you have high-profile people in the dunk tank, you’re more likely to get people come and throw to try to dunk them,” Bickers said.
“The first time in was a real shock, but it felt better the second time around,” Packard said.
Paul Beach, vice presdient of activities, plans to add a wall for mountain climbing and the human slingshot next year, depending on what the budget allows, he said.
The Associated Students of Bakersfield College’s only source of income comes from how many ASBC stickers are sold, Beach said.
“If the stickers are not sold, then we won’t have the funds to put on what we would like,” he said.
Freshman Jesse Martinez believes that school spirit will always be less in college when compared to high school.
“School spirit is only high during high school because the students are closer and know each other,” Martinez said. “At the college level you really don’t know many people.”
