Bakersfield College’s Women’s History Month presents “Susan B. Anthony: The Napoleon of the Movement,” a one-woman show, at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the BC Indoor Theater. Admission is free but donations are welcomed and appreciated.
The show will feature a one-woman performance by Melinda Strobel, who will portray Susan B. Anthony, an activist who helped in shaping the political rights of American women.
The Women’s History Month committee has been around for many years, according to Karen Eso, a BC psychology professsor and committee member.
“We’re just trying to keep the celebration of Women’s History Month going,” she said during an interview Wednesday. “We don’t have any funding and we don’t have a women’s studies program here on campus, so it’s a bunch of professors from different disciplines trying to promote Women’s History Month. We’re a small and dedicated committee and we would just like to see support from the student body, faculty and staff.”
Last year the group held a non-traditional career fair for women. The committee brought in women from all sorts of careers in Bakersfield and then brought in teenage girls from various populations to meet these successful women of Kern County.
The committee also puts on a film series and discussion every year throughout the month of March. This year films will cover topics including the U.S. women’s suffrage movement as well as women and reproduction.
Whether the funding comes from having a garage sale, book sale or donations from the BC Alumni Association, this committee was lucky to bring Women’s History Month to the campus, Eso said.
“This year this is coming out so late because we didn’t know up until a little while ago whether we could fund her (Strobel) fully or not. The donations will go to the Women’s History Month committee so we can fund our speakers for next year and we’ve actually formed a committee with the women’s studies faculty with Cal State Bakersfield.”
