Women’s history month is upon us, and BC’s Women’s History and More group is doing its part to help commemorate the event. This year’s event is titled “Bound and Unbound: Revealing Stories from Women’s Experiences.”
There will be three featured speakers. The first speaker is Jill Fields, a history professor from California State University, Fresno. Her topic “From Corsets to Girdles: Shaping Women’s Bodies in the Early 20th Century,” will be shared March 9 at 6:30 p.m. in Forum 101.
BC reference librarian Marci Lingo will be discussing the history and use a certain four-letter word and its implications and impact on women, with her titled discussion “The F-Word-And I Don’t Mean Feminism.” The discussion will be held on March 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fireside Room.
Lingo said that they would have liked to have more student participation in the events, but the lack of time didn’t allow it. The group hopes to get more students involved next year.
On March 20 at 6:30 p.m. in Forum West, BC sociology professor Pat Thompson will be presenting “Cut from Different Cloth: Burqas and Beliefs,” a new documentary by Cliff Orloff and Olga Shalygin. The documentary tells what it’s like to be a woman in post-Taliban Afghanistan.
The final speaker is Elizabeth Sordeur Pryor from UC Santa Barbara. She will be speaking about the experiences of African-American women facing issues of gender and race. The title of her discussion will be “Colored Girls in a Foreign Land: African-American Women Travelers in Europe During the 19th Century.”
A few of the events taking place off campus include a documentary at the Fox Theatre presented by FLICS, and a play at Empty Space on Oak Street. On March 3 at 7:30 p.m. Fox Theatre FLICS presents “In the Realms of the Unreal.” According to the movie’s Web site, realmsoftheunreal.com,, “This innovative feature length documentary, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Jessica Yu and produced by Susan West, explores the parallel lives of legendary outsider artist Henry Darger. Reclusive janitor by day, visionary artist by night, Darger’s 15,000 page novel detailed the exploits of the Vivian Girls, seven angelic sisters who lead a rebellion against godless, child-enslaving men.” The cost for the event is $4.
At the Empty Space, March 8-11 at 8 p.m. and March 11-12 at 4 p.m., the Empty Space Theatre presents “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds,” by Paul Zindel. Tickets are $5.
