Bakersfield College and Cal State-Bakersfield have come together to help out those BC students ready to take the next step in higher education.
On March 7 and 8, BC and CSUB held an on-site admission event for students who have met the transfer requirements, which include 60 units of general education at BC.
The event was sponsored by Title V, which is a federally funded program, according to Title V director for CSUB, Angela Guadian.
Students were accommodated through appointments or as walk-ins to the event.
Guadian also added that the event is supposed to “strengthen” the transfer process for students, and the focus of the event is “making the transition process smoother.”
At the event students were required to bring in their transcripts to be evaluated, by one of the on-spot evaluators, and students were required to fill out an online application to CSUB if the students had previously not done so.
Once the student’s transcripts were evaluated, the student would be given an acceptance letter if all requirements had been met.
However, if the student had not met all requirements, the student was given a conditional acceptance letter. Recipients of the conditional letter would be admitted once the transfer requirements are complete. According to Debby Blowers, CSUB lead evaluator, an AA is not required to transfer to CSUB nor does it guarantee admission to CSUB, and a General Education Certification is accepted.
Blowers also added that “very few [students] have been ineligible [to transfer].”
Barbara Braid, BC counselor in charge of transfers, said the event was “going very well.”
Braid also added that students worry about leaving BC, and this type of event allows students to meet CSUB staff.
According to Braid, “it [the event] also strengthens relationships between the two campuses.”
BC student Nikita Scott, a criminal justice major, felt that the event was “very helpful.”
Scott has attended BC since 2004 and added, “I’m glad I came in today.” Another BC student was Amy Walker, liberal studies major, who filled out the online application at the event and found the event to be “very helpful.”
According to Walker, she was conditionally admitted and plans to transfer completely for fall 2006.
Walker also added that the personnel at the event were “very nice, very helpful” and the overall process was “quick.”
CSUB also had the department of financial aid and outreach present at the event to further help out transferring students.
According to Guadian, a total of 166 students were admitted or conditionally admitted through the event and, “a little over 200 students” were served at the event.
