Arlington West Memorial came to Bakersfield College on Sept. 12. The memorial, which is erected every Sunday in Santa Monica, consists of a white cross for each soldier who died in Iraq in addition to one U.S. flag covered casket.
The memorial gives those on the West Coast of the United States a place to pay tribute to those soldiers. The memorial was erected to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 events. “The event is to honor the soldier in Iraq that has not come home,” said Democratic Club Vice President Jed Wright.
The event was organized by the Democratic Club. This was the second year in a row they have done it. The event was also sponsored by the African American Student Union.
The day also included a viewing of the documentary, “Arlington West,” which was shown later in the day giving both pro and con points of view on the validity of the war, according to Democratic Club adviser Helen Acosta.
“What was great, is that people came from Tehachapi, Kernville and even Porterville,” Acosta said.
