Bakersfield College filled the interim dean of students position with stability and expansion of student services in mind.
Angela Guadian-Mendez officially began her first day Feb. 11 as dean of students and is excited about the unique position.
“I like the transition into a greater role in student services,” said Guadian-Mendez.
The position of dean of students was formerly held by Don Turney, who steped down last semester inorder to make a reurn to the classroom.
Guadian-Mendez formerly held the position of Title V director at BC for nearly the past two years before accepting the dean of students position.
However, before joining the BC faculty, she held multiple roles at California State University of Bakersfield for nearly nine years to include student services and educator.
Guadian-Mendez loves the aspect of working with students. “I began to see how fulfilling it was,” said Guadian-Mendez.
Guadian-Mendez’s main focus in the new position is making sure that all the programs under the dean of students are getting what they need.
In addition, Guadian-Mendez hopes to continue growing student services and wants students to know they have a place where, “they [students] can go to receive assistance and be successful,” said Guadian-Mendez.
The dean of students also advises the Student Government Association.
John Lopez, SGA president, feels Guadian-Mendez will be a great addition.
“It will be a positive affect, especially her knowing Title V,” said Lopez.
The Inturim dean of students is a temprary position to be occupied over the next six months. At that time the postion becomes available and applicants are considered.
Guadian-Mendez intends of applying for the pernament full-time postion at BC.
“I look forward to it,” said Guadian-Mendez said.
The dean of student’s office and the SGA offices are located in the campus center.
