Bakersfield College lost its power due to a car crash that occurred on March 8.
According to Dennis Spencer, from maintenance and operations, the car crash occurred on University Avenue and Mt. Vernon Avenue. “When I came in, all we had to do was restart the computers,” he said.
While some professors cancelled Saturday classes due to the power outage, others moved their classes outside.
Students in the library and in class began to leave campus due to a power shortage. “I was in the middle of a library research workshop,” said Marci Lingo, a reference librarian at the Grace Van Dyke Byrd Library.
According to Lingo, the reason the library needed to close immediately was because the security alarms were down, and nobody could check out books.
A PG&E report mentioned that the power could have been back on by 3-3:30 p.m. “Oh, shucks. If we had waited a little bit longer, maybe we would have been OK,” Lingo said.
According to some students, the campus was officially closed by 12:20 p.m., and at approximately 12:35 p.m., the power was back on.
Some classes were still being taught outside the free-speech area while the power was back on.
