On July 1, former newly elected SGA President
Shawn Newsom resigned, leaving his
wife, former Vice President Kristi Newsom, as
the new acting president.
According to Shawn Newsom, he resigned
for “personal reasons and prior commitments.”
Shawn and Kristi Newsom ran for president
and vice president in last year’s SGA elections
campaign and were successfully elected in
May 2009.
Although Shawn is no longer the president,
he continues to participate in SGA as a senator
“donating a couple hours of my time during
the week,” he said. Shawn said that he feels the
resignation was made quickly enough that it
will not affect SGA’s ability to provide for the
students. “Things are running very smoothly.
We knew all of the officers that were incoming,
and it was a very smooth and easy transition,”
he said. “Everything is awesome, and
this is going to
be a great year,”
Kristi said.
The new vice
president, Gurvijay
Bains, was
an SGA senator
during the 2008-2009 school year and was selected
by Kristi Newsom.
According to Bains, his goal for the year
is to get more students and faculty involved
within the school. “Obviously, we had a few
problems last year, but this year I want things
to run more efficiently, and I want students to
know more about how the school works. I want
all generations, young and old, to have school
spirit, and I want to preach diversity. There are
so many different ideas in diversity that could
help the students.”
Bains said that he would like to see more
students come into their Friday meetings and
become more involved with SGA.
“It’s their student government; they should
want to know what we’re doing,” he said.
Bains would also like to work with a lot of
clubs on campus and help students with transfer
dates and taking the needed core classes
for their major. “My goal is to help all students
out no matter what they need. I want to
get the students involved and everything to run
smoothly and efficiently this year.”
