Bakersfield residents can see money from the government stimulus plan put to action with the construction on Mt. Vernon Avenue.
Rob Voyles, construction supervisor for the city of Bakersfield, explained that the road construction is part of the American Reinvestment Recovery Act of 2009. The ARRA was approved in February and is based on proposals from President Barack Obama.
The construction will be on Mt. Vernon Avenue from University Avenue to Highway 178 and is expected to be completed at the beginning of December. The project includes “reconstruction of the asphalt roadway, which means grinding and removing of the existing asphalt, then repaving,” according to Voyles.
Although the road will be open at all times, traffic will be limited to one lane at a time, north and south bound.
Bakersfield College student Matt Jolly, 18, said he only goes down Mt. Vernon Avenue if he needs to go to the bank, due to traffic. He also recommends not going into the shopping centers because it’s hard to get out.
Jolly, undeclared, also said it might make BC students late if they’re irresponsible.
“It could cause an accident,” Jolly said.
