The president’s own United States Marine Band from Washington, D.C., will be performing at the Rabobank Theatre and Convention Center on Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m.
The Marine Band has performed for every Presidential Inaugural since New Year’s Day in 1801, when President John Adams invited the band to perform at the Executive Mansion. The Marine Band is the only musical unit that bears the title “The President’s Own” and whose mission is to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps, according to the band Web site.
Dick Taylor, special events chairman of Bakersfield and counsel of the Navy League, said this tour takes place every five years and there has been two concerts hosted in Bakersfield, in 1999 and 2004. The tour consists of 31 days in concert, performing in 29 cities, according to Taylor.
“The Bakersfield concert is one of the largest venues, seating 3,000 people or more,” said Taylor.
The band was established by an Act of Congress on July 11, 1798, and is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization, according to the band Web site.
During concerts, the Marine Band features solo performances by musicians ranging from the brass section to the string section.
Tickets were distributed by the public of defense through an ad request form through the Bakersfield Californian on the Sept. 22 issue, Taylor added. Their was a limit of four tickets per person but if people did not have the opportunity to submit this ad, according to Taylor, there is a 15-minute rule before the concert.
“If you don’t have a ticket, there will be two lines, one with ticket holders and one without. If by 7:15 p.m. there are seats unclaimed, we will allow people from the non-ticket line to fill any empty spaces.”
