Six cars were stolen off campus and a few were broken into from Oct. 26 to Nov. 2, according to Joseph Grubbs, the executive director of college safety at Bakersfield College.
In response, the college safety team has increased security patrol around Bakersfield College campus.
Although Grubbs does not want to expose their methods to the those breaking into cars, he ensured that they have established security measures to ensure campus safety.
The cars most targeted are Hyundais, Kias, and pick-up trucks. They are easier to steal especially the Hyundai and Kia because they are easier to take once inside.
Grubbs’ gave advice to students and staff to help prevent further car theft problems:
- Check with your dealership if you have a Hyundai or Kia for the recall that is making those cars the easier targets.
- Invest in anti-car theft devices like a kill switch.
- Save the BC College Safety number (661)395-4554 to your phone.
- Remember: “If You See Something Say Something.”
Grubbs wants the students and staff to know that he is doing everything in his power to keep the campus safe. He feels confident in saying that the increase of security patrol has significantly decreased car theft.
