On March 14 the Office of Student Life faculty presented students with a Barbie movie screening
and cosplay competition in the Fireside room on campus.
The host of the event, Bella Saldivar, shared her thoughts on the showing and how it can be used as an opportunity to put the voices and experiences of women at the forefront.“This is something we do every month, but this time it’s just for women.”, Saldivar said, “I love creating a community where people can express themselves and meet people outside of class.”
Student Life, in addition to the Student Government and Latinas Unidas, was
able to put on the movie and set up a woman-friendly environment full of pink decor and snacks. Hits such as popcorn, pink macaroons, homemade rice crispy treats, hotdogs, and pink mocktails were available during the showing.
Men weren’t entirely excluded though. Jose Zorrilla, a student who attended the movie screening stated, “It’s really deep, seeing the understanding of a woman, it’s completely the opposite of a man’s perspective.” He shared his excitement for the way the movie flips stereotypes and gender
roles on their head.
The students at the event were mostly quiet and focused on the movie,
occasionally grabbing snacks relaxed and finding a seat. The crowd and even staff could also be found laughing at the comedic moments in the movie.
At the end of the movie, the Barbie Pageant was held for students to strut their stuff as the beloved franchise and was ranked based on applause. not limited to just Barbies, a couple of Kens waited to display their fashion at the pageant as well. Just as Barbie strives to be all-inclusive, all contestants who had entered the contest found themselves to be winners of the contest.
