On Wednesday, April 10 Bakersfield College’s Student Government Association (BCSGA) hosted a Student Town Hall with President Dr. Jerry Fliger. BCSGA Vice President Amanda Anguiano asked a series of questions and represented all of BC by speaking on behalf of all student body regarding academic progress, campus life, and overall educational success.
Dr. Fliger shared his educational background in college and related to BC students and their journey in their early college experiences. Dr. Fliger stated that after failing college following high school, he never gave up and tried again. He went on to obtain a PhD in education. “I found out I like teaching, if you’re here in your 20’s and don’t know what to do yet, you still have time,” stated Dr. Fliger.
With Dr. Fliger’s new position as BC’s President, Fliger is optimistic about creating change and making a difference at BC. Dr. Fliger encouraged students to stop by his office and voice their concerns regarding their BC experience.
As a first-generation college graduate and not knowing what to do career-wise, Dr. Fliger stated he understood how crucial it can be for students to succeed academically. “If it wasn’t for you all here, all of BC, my faculty, and I wouldn’t be here.”
The BCSGA asked a series of questions regarding student parking, class scheduling, campus safety, food, and accessibility.
Dr. Fliger insisted it is not a parking issue, but a convenience issue. Although students are not always going to be able to park in a desirable spot, Dr. Fliger ensured there is still parking available.
When asked about security and their presence, Dr. Fliger insisted that although it is a complex issue and the law prohibits BC from hiring police, a possible solution can lead to brighter lighting on campus, at least one security officer on shift at all times and planning conducted safety drills to prepare for at-risk situations.
Another question was regarding food costs for students. With inflation and the rising costs of necessities, would that affect BC’s Pantry services? Dr. Fliger and faculty stated that food costs are always studied and measured and would not be negatively affected.
Students can also look forward to more improvement in student spaces at our campuses.
Everyone is always encouraged to attend all of BCSGA’s future meetings.
