Bakersfield College Student Government Association (BCSGA) hosted a KCCD Trustee Candidate Open Forum on Oct 21 allowing trustee candidates to have an open discussion about the future of our college district if they are elected. The meeting was held in the Norman Levan Center and was also held via Zoom.
Kern County College District (KCCD) represents three community colleges, Bakersfield College, Cerro Coso Community College and Porterville College.
Each candidate represented a different area, this year the term for areas four, six and seven have just ended allowing new candidates to step forward. The decisions of the KCCD board of trustees will impact students’ quality of education and bring forward more opportunities for students that may impact our campus life.
The forum showcased five candidates that showed a readiness to assist the school board. Candidates being Daniel Diez and Flor Olvera who will be running for area four, Yovani Jimenez for area six and Connie Perez Andreesen along with Kay Meek who will be running to represent area seven.
Each candidate has a unique and diverse background that allows students to relate to their struggles. Everyone was given time to speak about areas of the school board they would like to improve and difficulties that they find students struggling with on a daily basis. Even giving attendees, a chance to ask questions any concerns and questions to each candidate. Unfortunately, Kay Meek who is running for area seven, was unable to be present due to travel issues although she left a warming message to audience members.
The forum allowed students, faculty and staff to interact with the candidates during and after the discussion. BCSGA provided a variety of food and refreshments along with a meet and greet to get up close and personal with the future of our school.
Leonardo Ayala, director of campus engagement and leadership development who works closely with the BCSGA spoke about the importance of students voting and using their voice to help the betterment of their school district.
“If you know anyone who isn’t registered to vote please encourage them to use their voice for us as a community and a country” Ayala stated
With the election only two weeks away it is encouraged for students to do research and use their voices for the upcoming election.
