Voters headed to the polls on Nov. 5 to make their picks for local, state and federal offices.
Kern County voters selected county supervisors in District 2 and District 5, assembly members in districts 32 and 35, and representatives to the U.S. congress. They also decided on multiple propositions and a California senator. Voters also cast their ballots for various school board members in Bakersfield, Arvin, Shafter and Delano.
According to the Kern County Election website on Nov. 7 the results are as follows:
- U.S. Representative 20th Congressional District: Vince Fong (R) won with a total of 67,531 votes. Although his fellow republican challenger Mike Boudreaux decided a few months ago that he no longer wanted to be in that position, it was too late to remove him from the ballot. (He still received 28,397 votes, about 25% of the votes.) Fong also won the 32nd District seat in the California Assembly, a position he previously held before filling the congressional seat vacated by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Fong has publicly stated he wants the congressional seat, so there will likely be a future special election for the state assembly position.
- U.S. Representative for Congressional District 22: as of Nov.6, David Valadao has the lead over democrat Rudy Salas, but as of press time the race was still too close to call.
- State Assembly Member District 35: It appears that incumbent Dr. Jasmeet Bains will retain her seat. She received a total of 32,123 votes over her challenger Robert Rosas who had 24994 votes.
- Kern Community College Board Members: In area 4 Danny Diaz came in with a total of 12,167 votes, winning with more than 64% over opponent Flor Olvera. In area 7, incumbent Kay Meek had 56% of the vote compared with opponent Connie Perez Andreesen (43%).
- Kern High School Board Member races for areas 2 and 3 are both close. As of press time the top three finishers in area two were Steve Rodrigue (37%), Manuel Ramirez (25%) and Otilia Curiel (24%). In area 3, the candidates Penny Lepisto 50%) and David F. Manriquez (49%) are only separated by 200 votes.
- Bakersfield City School Board Member #1 – had four candidate finish within 9 percent of each other: Michael Eggert (30%), Luis Garcia (26%), Emma De La Rosa (21%) and Brandon Holladay (21%).
