Thank you for keeping in touch with us through our college’s great newspaper, The Rip. As mentioned in previous editions of The Rip, the Associated Students of Bakersfield College is the student government of Bakersfield College that consists of committed students who want to make changes on campus and in the community. To give you an idea of what we do, here are a few projects that ASBC has been working on:
* For the past few years, the ASBC discount sticker has created many savings opportunities for BC students. The sticker, which is currently available for $15, offers many on- and off-campus discounts for students such as a 5 percent discount on purchases at the bookstore (including textbooks) and free admission to all basketball, baseball and softball games on campus, as well as two free tickets to home football games. So, get your sticker before buying your books for summer classes. Drop by the Student Activities office, located in Campus Center 4, for more information.
* On several occasions, ASBC was asked to provide feedback regarding resolutions such as the one that would change the withdrawal date from 75 percent of the term to 50 percent. To reflect students’ viewpoints accurately, ASBC conducted a survey of 300 students and submitted a report to the administration. The result of the survey matched the vote of the Student Senate. ASBC stands for what benefits the students.
* ASBC has organized many events on campus, including Fall Welcome and Homecoming, and is planning a great Spring Fling. To know how you can be on committees that organize such events, please e-mail me at [email protected].
* ASBC has just ordered five new bulletin boards equipped with glass doors and individual locks. These boards will be available to all campus clubs and will help improve student awareness, as well as the look of our Campus Center!
* ASBC is working on a Web site, and will update you with more information once the site is up.
* For more news, keep reading this column in upcoming editions of The Rip.
To help us attain our goals, please submit your ideas, comments, compliments or complaints to [email protected]. Let us know how we can improve the quality of your education. We rely on your feedback.
Campus beautification: Mural submissions accepted
ASBC is planning to have a mural painted on campus and is now accepting submissions from all students and artists. The mural will be painted on the extension of the brick wall next to the cafeteria and behind the Student Lounge. A note will be posted on the wall for students to locate the wall more easily. Please submit your sample drawings to the Student Activities office no later than April 30. All expenses associated with painting the mural on the wall will be covered by ASBC. The drawing must not affiliate Bakersfield College with any political or religious views. Be creative, and choose a style and subject to your liking. Abstract submissions are welcomed. For more information, please contact Activities Senator Lori Reyna at 331-8083.
— Mojibi-Yazdi is ASBC’s vice president of communications.
