If everyone lived by the Charles Schultz quote, “happiness is a warm puppy,” it would be a much better world.
Animal testing, animal cruelty and the use of animal fur for fashion are just a few of the problems PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, protest. We need organizations like PETA to speak up for creatures without a voice.
When we are hurting or scared or sad, we scream about it. We tell people when we need help or when we’re in pain. When animals are in pain or scared, what are they to do? Nothing, they can’t do anything! We are the only voice they have, and it’s time we start to help our little friends.
People say we need animal testing to keep ourselves safe. So you’re telling me we can fly to the moon, but we can’t find a chemical test or something that will tell us the same or more than an animal test would. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act does not require the use of animal testing. All it requires is that the product be proven safe. This can be done with alternative testing.
The FDA supports the research and development of alternatives to animal testing. These alternatives are out there, and it is about time every company began to use them. There are hundreds of companies that do not test on animals. If they can do it, everyone can.
Millions of animals are killed for their fur. Why wear fur when you can’t even tell the difference between real and faux fur?
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, “every year the global leather industry slaughters more than a billion animals and tans their skins.” Before the animals are murdered, they must live in a tight space where they are deprived of water, food and air. All this occurs so you can have a leather wallet.
PETA and other organizations are in a continuous fight to get all forms of animal cruelty banned. It is not hard to give up certain luxuries, like leather boots and a mink coat when you know the horror and torture that takes place to create them.
Now I agree that PETA can be extreme with its protests, but their message is correct and their intentions are well meant and highly needed in this inhumane environment.
Opinion: The fur hits the fan with PETA
