The word classic is used often in recent times, but what makes a movie, book or song classic?
One way of defining it is of the first or highest quality and a very classic song that has managed to transcend time is by two well-known groups, who did a collaboration of rock ‘n’ roll and hip-hop.
That song is the 1986 remake of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way,” by Run DMC and Aerosmith. This combining of genres caused a massive interchange of both fan bases because people who liked hip-hop were introduced to rock ‘n’ roll as were rockers introduced to rap.
I think the reason for this song’s success is the fact that Run DMC chose a very popular song to remake.
This song worked because people already knew about it, but the funky beats and intertwining of rap bars is what made this song classic. I am a fan of this song because it allowed me to see how versatile Run DMC was with their style of rapping, as well as opening my mind to different kinds of music.
The members of Run DMC all came from middle-class backgrounds in Hollis, Queens, New York. They were one of the founders of the genre of hip-hop.
The collaboration was born when the group’s DJ Jam Master Jay, got a record from another DJ that had the label ripped off, and it turned out to be an Aerosmith album.
This also allowed for the artists themselves to reach new levels in their music as well as in sales and recognition. Aerosmith, a group that consisted of band members from all across the East Coast including Yonkers, New York, Hopedale Mass., Boston and even New London, New Hampshire, were able to get a new start on their careers with a new twist to their old style and a younger audience.
Run DMC was able to get music out into mainstream America and continue to break records for starting a genre and passing the torch. Run DMC went on to become a household name everywhere, and DMC became the Godfather of a movement and culture.
This mixing of cultures changed the face of music forever, allowing new genres to be created because of both influences and raising the bar in the music industry.
Teenagers and adults from each generation can relate to and recognize this song because it is a prime example of what makes a song classic.
