You may have never heard of Swallow Falls, or the FL DS MDFR, but things are about to change.
Swallow Falls is the perfect place for Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader, “Saturday Night Live”), an inventor who has big dreams to create something that will change the world. The only problem is that Flint’s inventions aren’t always as successful as he plans.
However, The Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator (FL DS MDFR) is a machine created by Flint that converts water into food and is about to change the world.
“Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” is a movie based on a children’s picture book by Judi Barrett that tells of an island that rains food. However, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller take a hilarious twist on the book.
First, there is Steve the monkey. Steve is Flint’s right hand man, (or monkey) who has a monkey thought processor attached to his head, allowing him to speak about what he is thinking the whole time. Steve follows Flint throughout the movie with his crazy shenanigans and funny one-word thoughts.
Anna Farris (“Scary Movies”) voices Sam Sparks the smart, perky intern trying to become a TV weather girl and other cast members include James Caan (“The Godfather”) who plays Flint’s gruff, logical and rational father. Mr. T is Earl Deveraux, the short-short wearing suspicious policeman who is always trying to protect his son, and Andy Samberg (“Hot Rod”) as baby Brent, the fat, boastful town icon.
The graphics and the personalities of the characters complimented each other perfectly. If I closed my eyes and pictured how the characters would look like, it would be pretty close to how the artists depicted them as well.
Throughout the movie you grow to love each character for their quirks and laugh frequently at the numerous puns. Flint is so innocently na’ve and so desperately looking for others’ approval that it makes you fall in love with him and his intentions more and more as the story continues.
The movie also has frequent comic repeats such as the “rat-birds,” and Steve’s reactions to things happening in the story. The movie is so innocently hilarious that it brings out your inner child and most happy thoughts.
Amongst the hilarity, visual jokes and well themed music though, lay numerous important morals to the movie that leave you thinking about how you should treat people around you and love them for who they are.
“Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” is an animated film, but not just a child’s film. It is enjoyable for all age levels and for anyone with any sense of humor. It might leave you a bit hungry, especially if you see it in 3D, but you’ll leave the theater happy and with a new sense of love for geeks.
