After hearing my friends rave about the new restaurant Cafe Crepes, I finally decided to try it. Walking into the restaurant, I had high hopes. Located at 9500 Brimhall Road, it is a nicely decorated small space with a friendly atmosphere.
But as I looked over the menu, some of my hopes had fallen. Among the several kinds of crepes and panini sandwiches offered, the only vegetarian options were dessert crepes and a cheese and pesto panini. As a vegetarian, this presented a problem. I tried to order a baja breakfast crepe without meat, but was told they do not serve breakfast crepes in the afternoon, which wasn’t stated anywhere in the menu. With no other options, I ordered the cheese and pesto panini. My friend ordered the chicken pesto crepe.
On my panini was mozzarella, tomatoes, spinach and pesto sauce. The bread was crispy and the tomatoes were fresh. I’d never had anything similar to a cheese and pesto panini so I didn’t really know what to expect, but I was pleased with it. My friend said her chicken pesto crepe was very good . until the middle, which was not cooked all the way. She reassured me that it was much better when she had it before, when it was cooked by the owner.
After we finished, we were still kind of hungry so we each ordered a dessert crepe and shared. Like the panini, I didn’t know what to expect from “Olivia’s Delight,” a peanut butter and Nutella crepe. But also like the panini, I was pleasantly surprised. The PB & Nutella crepe was pure sweet and gooey goodness. Our other dessert was “Lemon Delight,” a lemon curd crepe topped with blueberries. It tasted great, but it was cold. Maybe that’s the way that it was supposed to be, but I think it would have been better warm.
The prices at Cafe Crepes are reasonable, with most breakfast crepes (served with a side of breakfast potatoes) costing about $6, all savory crepes (served with salad or house potatoes) are $6.95, dessert crepes range from about $3 to $4, and paninis range from $5 to $6.
Despite a few problems, Cafe Crepes is a great restaurant and has the potential to be even better once they’ve been around longer. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone tired of the same old burger and fries.
