The God of Mischief is back in Loki season two ready to cause some chaos and stop it as well. Loki, the main villain of the first Avengers film, is now walking the line between hero and villain as he works with the Time Variance Authority or TVA to take care of the sacred timeline.
Loki isn’t the only one wondering who he truly is. The Hunters for the TVA are also questioning who they are after finding out that they were all pulled from different timelines and that their memories were wiped away in season one.
Tom Hiddleston is back to his signature role, but this time around he is playing Loki with the nuance of someone who is trying to be a better person while also not forgetting his past actions. Hiddleston gives Loki charm and charisma while also depicting his darker side. It’s a hard balance to find, but Hiddleston knocks it out of the park.
Loki, Owen Wilson’s Mobius, and Wunmi Mosaku’s Hunter B-15 are in search for Loki’s variant Sylvie, played by Sophia Di Martino, for her actions at the end of season one. The returning cast is joined this season by Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan, who plays the TVA’s tech guy, who might know more than he lets on. The actors seem very invested in the material and the fast-paced action scenes are well shot and choreographed.
The first two episodes were reminiscent of Luc Besson’s “The Fifth Element” with its futuristic feel, strong visuals and world building. While there wasn’t a blue opera singing alien in the show, the series did evoke a similar mysterious and fun tone.
With the looming threat of He Who Remains vowing to return and a divided TVA Loki will have to intervene before he runs out of time.
Marvel seems to have gone back to basics with a well-loved character who has been around since the beginning, but also found a now side showcase. It remains to be seen where the series will go but the first two episodes are an interesting start. The six-episode Marvel show debuted its first episode on Oct. 5 on Disney+ with subsequent episodes premiering on Thursday nights.
