“Joker: Folie à Deux” is a film that has been the center of the community since its release last week. The film has received some of the most negative reviews of the year and somehow has a lower rating than the dumpster fire that was “Madame Web”. I’m not sure if anyone has asked themselves this yet but, does the movie deserve the hate? No, no it does not.
I went into the film thinking I was going to hate it and came out genuinely surprised about how good it was. So, when I saw the amount of hate it was getting, I had to sit and ask myself? Was it bad? Was there something I missed? No, there wasn’t this movie was genuinely amazing.
Half of the negative reviews I have seen genuinely have no actual input into the conversation of the movie and are just pure hate without any reason. Though there are some people who do have reasons, but I personally find the reasons unfounded.
Complaining about it being a musical and saying it was a dumb decision? Did you watch the first movie, or are you just hating for the sake of being negative? I challenge anyone who says the music aspect of this film was irrelevant and dumb to go back and watch the first movie and tell me that it was not already shown that music is a big part of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) at major points of his character.
I’ve also noticed a lot of people who hate it are the same type of people that the movie is specifically poking fun at. These people wanted pure madness with action and death and insanity and now are crying and throwing a fit that director Todd Phillips stuck with a realistic character arc for Arthur and took a risk in shutting down the incel idol of this generation.
Apologies that Arthur was not some badass incel killer who just went crazy and was actually a real person with severe trauma and mental illness who maybe would want to accept the fact that there is more to him than this made-up alter ego.
Don’t even get me started on the comic book fans who refuse to separate the comic version of the Joker to this version of the Joker and can’t grasp the idea that this is a movie about a whole different person and the movie just uses the IP of DC characters to help people connect to the movie. Yes, I also love comic books and DC, but it is plain to see that this is not supposed to be the actual Joker we know and love.
The music was amazing, Lady Gaga (as Lee Quinzel) and Joaquin Phoenix killed it, Todd Phillips knew he wasn’t giving you what you wanted and you’re reacting exactly as expected. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but do the haters realize that the movie itself is telling them to take a hike?
