Driving through a nature preserve to a lodge, this father and daughter pair hit a large creature with their car. After making sure it was dead they placed it in the trunk of the car and finally made it to the lodge. Where the believed dead creature proceeded to wake up still in the car, where it was then shot and declared a unicorn.
“Death of a Unicorn” is an hour and 48 minutes with a pretty stacked cast. The main character, Ridley is played by Jenna Ortega, and the father of Ridley, Elliot is played by Paul Rudd. The major characters were the Leopold family, Shepard Leopold (Will Poulter), Belinda Leopold (Téa Leoni), and Odell Leopold (Richard E. Grant). There were four other major characters in Griff (Anthony Carrigan) who was a butler for the Leopolds’. Shaw (Jessica Hynes) a bodyguard for the Leopolds’, and two scientists Dr. Song (Steve Park) and Dr. Bhatia (Sunita Mani).
The special effects of the movie weren’t the best in terms of gore, though they were still quite well done. There were bits of the gore that under scrutiny would look off though with the camera placements and light used, you can’t tell unless you look closely.
While “Death of a Unicorn” is listed as a horror/dark comedy movie, there isn’t much horror to it. If you went to see this movie for a proper scare, you’d leave feeling disappointed though entertained.
The ending of the movie left something to be desired as it started feeling less and less like a horror movie. It started feeling more like a strange take of a coming-of-age or a reunion type of movie, though with a dark twist.
Where the concept of the movie was interesting, I do think it might’ve been a little too magical or even a bit too comedic. While this made the movie entertaining, if it was more horror I feel like it could’ve dropped some of the magic and comedy and just embraced the scare.
I’d recommend people see the movie for the interesting take on unicorns and my favorite character Griff. I would say to wait though, let the movie come out onto streaming services and not spend the money on a ticket. I wouldn’t say it’s worth the trip or the price of the theatre though it is definitely entertaining.
