The BC men and women’s track and field teams took center stage at Memorial Stadium as both teams hosted their first Western State Conference mini-meet of the season.
Women’s head coach Pam Kelley and men’s head coach Bob Covey were pleased with the overall results, but hinted that there are still some improvements that need to be made.
“We got off to a real slow start. We basically have a freshman team. We have four sophomores of which only one was really an impact runner last year. Impact meaning qualifying for Southern Cal and state (championships),” Kelley said. “Once we got started I think we had some good performances. I think we will be able to build on this.”
That “impact” runner Kelley speaks of is Misty Coston, who finished first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.5 seconds, second in the 200 at 27.4 and first in the long jump with a distance of 16-4.
However, she certainly was not the only impact athlete for the ‘Gades, which as a team won the overall competition, scoring a total of 80 points. Cuesta College finished second with 43, Santa Monica came in third with 36 and L.A. Valley finished fourth with 9 points.
The men’s team ended the day with similar success. BC finished first scoring 78 points, Cuesta came in second with 48, L.A. Valley came in third with 38 and Santa Monica scored 13 to finish fourth.
In the 100-meter high hurdles, Mieshia Thomason recorded a time of 16.7, while Miranda Lewis finished at 17.8 to take the top two spots.
The 400 high hurdles yielded similar results. Lewis and Jillynn Long finished 1-2 with identical times of 1:16.2. Long also finished first in the 400 with a time of 1:03.5, Amy Wilbanks finished third at 1:15.3 and Renae Rollo earned fourth at 1:25.8.
Thomason and Wilbanks finished third and fourth respectively in the 200-meters as well. Terry Woodard won the 200-meter event for the men with a time of 22.5, while Calvin Brooks finished fourth at 23.8.
The men’s team also won both high hurdle events. Jess Washington covered the 110-meter distance in 15.0. He also won the triple jump with a mark of 47-6. Brian Andrews earned the top spot in the 400-meter high hurdles with a time of 57.4 and his teammate Del Boyer finished second at 58.9.
For the men’s team in the 400, Filip Walotka grabbed the top spot with a time of 49.5 and Jess Cranfill came in fourth at 53.2.
The ‘Gades swept the hammer throw event with Chris Figures finishing first with a distance of 177- 3. Charles Faubus took the second spot with a mark of 150-8; Mike Poncetta came in third throwing 132-10 and Robert Whitton fourth at 132-3.
The women’s team also found success in the hammer throw, grabbing 3 out of the top four spots. Megan Clutters threw for a distance of 106-2 good for first place. Tisa Martinez came in second at 105 feet and Vanntha Chann finished fourth with a mark of 95-11.
Three BC runners earned places in the distance events. Adela Flores finished second in 800 and third in the 1500 with a time of 5:29.6. Kristen Chambers finish fourth in the 3000, crossing the finish line at 13:13. Antonio Armendariz finished third in the 1500 and the 3200. Both BC teams finished first in the 1,600-meter relay.
Coach Covey said he was pleased with the results of the meet, considering it was the first WSC event of the year.
“We have the makings I think of a pretty good team, but we have a lot of holes we got to fill up,” Covey said. “All of our guys are training really hard right now.”
