The Bakersfield College wrestling team opened its 2005 season at home, beating three of four colleges to place second in a dual tournament Sept. 10 at BC.
The Renegades, winners of the state title the past two seasons, had gone 35-0 prior to the tournament.
The team’s first loss in four years was not much of a concern for Coach Bill Kalivas, who is focusing his team on finding the right chemistry and on conditioning.
” In order to win, you can’t be afraid to lose,” Kalivas said.
The Renegades won their first match against Delta 30-20. Their next match was 35-11 over Mt. San Antonio. In the third match, Sacramento City came on strong and held on to win 24-17, giving them first place in the tournament.
The fourth and final match was a 28-18 victory over Golden West.
Last season, BC was the only team to have all 10 wrestlers in each weight category go to the state championship.
Of last year’s championship team, only Jason Points returned, giving the Renegades a very young team. This season, Points already has two pins.
The team is young but talented. Cody Gibson and Britt Mooney each had four wins and two pins in the tournament.
