Bakersfield College freshman Sara Ansolabehere shot an under-par round of 71 Monday in a Western State Conference women’s golf mini-tournament .
Ansolabehere has been the low medalist in the last two matches, leading the Renegades to a third conference victory in the first five conference minitournaments.
The Renegades finished with a 316 total, 26 shots less than Santa Barbara, which had 342. Moorpark was third with 343.
After the win, BC coach Larry Cook said, “Truthfully I am not surprised. The team has been working hard, and it’s starting to show.”
In the last competition, BC’s Megan Fulfer had an 80 and Jeong Woo shot 81. Rounding off the scores was Gloria Wright at 84 and Donna Hayes at 96.
The tournament played on Sept. 26 in La Verne was a little closer with the Renegades totaling 344 shots, winning by only four shots over Moorpark and Santa Barbara. Their next competition is Oct. 10.
VOLLEYBALL
BC continues to improve after a 2-4 start. The Renegades have won their last three matches and are now 5-4 behind coach Carl Ferreira.
Friday, BC swept Allan Hancock 30-27, 30-26, and 30-24 with Natalie Hierlmeier leading the Renegades with 13 kills followed by Lily Banks with nine kills. Britney White had 40 assists.
In Visalia on Saturday at the College of the Sequoias Tournament, Jayme Marotta led BC with 25 kills and 39 digs as the Renegades won both of their matches. In the first match against West Hills, BC swept the three games 30-10, 30-11, and 30-16.
In the second match, host team COS gave BC a challenge but could not come back, losing to BC 30-27, 21-30, 25-30, 30-23, 15-13.
Hierlmeier finished with 17 kills and 21digs, and White led the team with 50 assists against COS.
BC will be in Moorpark on Friday.
WRESTLING
BC beat East Los Angeles 34-9 in a dual match on Friday, then placed second Saturday in the Golden West Tournament in Huntington Beach.
The Renegades will lose Jason Points for a month as he lost two teeth and will require emergency oral surgery. The incident occurred during his quarterfinal match, an 11-4 decision over Tim Hawkins of Mt. San Antonio College. BC’s Britt Mooney earned upper weight honors in the 184-pound class.
Ty Souza of Mt. SAC lost to BC’s Josh Williams in the 165-pound class division with a 5-3 decision.
The other wrestlers with top places were Randy Daugherty as runner-up in 157 pounds, and Cody Gibson at 133, Orlando Landois at 157, and heavyweight Josh Marquez all placing third. Derrick Hunter at 141 came in fourth place. The wrestlers travel to Santa Ana this Saturday.
