Bakersfield College’s Brittany Grimes placed first in the Western State Conference cross country championships Oct. 25 at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria. Her finish, in a time of 19 minutes and 4 seconds on the three-mile course, helped the Renegades finish second as a team in the conference meet. Grimes took first place last year in the conference and finished second in the state.
BC’s Clarissa Rivera came in with a personal best, finishing third in conference with a time of 19:41, just 10 seconds behind Jessica Gomez of College of the Canyons.
“She was very determined,” said BC coach Dave Frickle. “She ran very tough.”
Glendale came in first with 57 points, and BC had 76. Cuesta finished third with 102.
BC’s men’s cross country team took sixth place in the WSC meet with 136 points behind Glendale, which scored 44 points on the four-mile course in Santa Maria. Ventura took second with 76 points and Hancock was third with 94.
BC will go to Balboa Park in San Diego this Friday for the Southern California finals.
Women’s golf
BC scored 378 points to final third in Monday’s WSC championships. Moorpark won the title with 365, and Santa Barbara was second in 366.
BC’s Sara Ansolabehere, who shot 85, and Jeong Yoo (96) and Megan Fulfer (97) qualified for the Southern California Regionals scheduled Nov. 8-9 in Fontana.
Volleyball
BC’s record fell to 8-8 Friday with a 30-22, 30-26, 30-28 loss to College of the Canyons in Valencia.
Coach Carl Ferreira, in the middle of his first year at BC, said, “It’s a great growing opportunity. I have absolutely no complaints with these players.”
Against Canyons, Natalie Hierlmeier had 11 kills and 21 digs, Samantha Geissel had 10 kills and five blocks, Jayme Marotta had 10 kills and nine digs, and Britney White led the team with 34 set assists.
BC will face L.A. Pierce in Los Angeles on Friday.
Soccer
BC posted its ninth shutout of the year by beating Citrus 5-0 Friday.
Goalie Haylee Maiden recorded two saves in the win. BC was also sparked by the defense of Diana Valdez, Tanna Cain and Brittany Brown.
Coach Scott Dameron said, “This was one of our more disciplined efforts, which we can hopefully build on. We’ve still got a lot of work left to do.”
The Renegades are 12-4-2. Maryellen Bunting scored two goals for her 19th and 20th of the year. BC travels to Glendale for a match Friday.
Wrestling
Heavyweight Josh Marquez won by technical fall over John Terndrup to help BC beat Moorpark 23-16.
In other BC victories, Keith Gibson beat Eric Medina 4-2 at 125, Cody Gibson (133) won by forfeit, Sal Sanchez (141) won, Randy Doherty (157) beat Evan Rodriguez 9-4, and Britt Mooney (184) beat Shawn Riggs 9-4.
