The Bakersfield College women’s golf team enters its 2006 season finding itself playing for individual competition as the team is short a couple players at the moment, according to coach Larry Cook.
In the first conference match on Aug. 28 in Ventura, Sara Ansolabehere shot an 85 while freshmen Danielle Brice shot an 84. The Renegades’ low scorer was Dana Arneson with an 82, giving BC a top 10 finish.
Ansolabehere, the only returning player, set BC’s all-time low stroke average with an 81.1 stroke average last season.
Last Monday, at the Santa Barbara Municipal Golf Course hosted by Santa Barbara City College, Ansolabehere shot a 78 to place fifth with Amber Clifford shooting a 3-under-par 69. Arneson came in 11th with an 83 followed in 15th by Brice, who shot 86.
The women travel to Santa Maria to face Allan Hancock College on Sept. 18.
Volleyball
BC’s team, after a Western State Conference fourth place finish in 2005 season under coach Carl Ferreira, has the team off to a winning start in 2006.
In the Grossmont Tournament, the Renegades won six matches while only losing two. Then came Ventura, which lost all three games raising the Renegades preseason record to 2-0.
In BC’s opening match, the Renegades defeated College of the Sequoias 3-0 with 30-21, 30-24 and 30-21 scores. Ashley Mills led the team with 37 set assists while Emily Ermigarat helped with 26 digs. Kara Mckeehan led the team with 19 kills followed by Natalie Heirlmeier with 10 kills for the Renegades.
Cross country
Look for Clarissa Rivera to lead the women’s team after a successful freshman season in 2005.
In the opening meet, Rivera finished 12th with a time of 21:58:13. Rounding off the top five finishers for BC was Shawna Rountree, 22:38:57, followed by Briana Smith at 23:56:00, Jill Unruh at 24:11:13 and Tenesha Mitchell 25:01:33.
