After a loss at Whittier with Rio Hondo, BC went into its ninth conference game at Gerry Collis Field on March 13. Its opponent, College of the Canyons, was looking for their sixth straight win.
BC trailed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning but made a massive comeback to win 8-3.
Noe Flores tied up the game by forcing Jeff Burleson in on a fielder’s choice. Tyler Garewal drew a walk and Eric Hicks’ bunt loaded the bases.
After back-to-back strikeouts, the Cougars were looking for just one more out to send the Renegades back to the dugout. With the bases loaded, Brandon Boren, a freshmen this year from Stockdale High, singled in two runs and Casey Brown followed with another RBI single.
Juan Martinez finished off the rally bringing in two more runs on his single, giving BC a five-run lead against the College of the Canyons. Earlier in the game, BC’s Noe Flores and Tyler Garewal hit back-to-back home runs.
Jared Hoyt, a Bakersfield High graduate and a freshman this year, made his first start against the Cougars and pitched the entire game. Coach Tim Painton said that the pitching set the tone for the game, and that Hoyt has performed well out of the bullpen.
Hoyt gave up only three runs off of nine hits. Hoyt said, “I just try to throw strikes.” The coach said he was “outstanding all day.”
Hoyt said his curveball was on and off, but “mostly the fast ball was working good.”
After Tuesday’s blowout victory against the Cougars, BC had a 13-10 overall and a 5-4 record in conference division games.
The Renegades play against Citrus Valley tomorrow at home at 3 pm.
