Kory Marko threw a perfect game against the Santa Monica College Corsairs on March 13th as the Renegades won 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth. The umpires required the game to be called in the fifth inning, due to an eight run mercy rule.
“It’s just another game,” said Marko, “just another win that’s the only thing that’s important.”
Marko threw 12 strike outs and improved her record to 16-5. She then improved her record twice more when the Renegades beat College of the Canyons 8-2 and 5-3 in a double header that following Thursday. The two wins put team in first place in the Western State Conference. According to Coach Sandi Taylor, it marked the first win against C.O.C in seven years as well as placing the Renegades in a position they have not held at this point in the season before.
“We’ve usually come back from behind but right now were in front,” said coach Sandi Taylor.
The team has an overall record of 18-6 and 11-1 in conference play. They have won 11 straight conference games. The pitching was not the fasted the women have seen during their game against Santa Monica, and that forced the girls to mold to the ways of the opposing pitcher’s style of throw. “Sometimes with slower pitcher’s it’s harder to hit so we battled well,” said catcher Katie Sawyer, “I think everyone hit the ball real well.”
The Renegades started the game with back to back doubles by left fielder Heather Spoon and short-stop Nathalie Martinez. Sawyer hit a two-run homerun to left center during her first at bat and finished the game going 2-for-3 with three RBI’s.Tomorrow they play away against Sylmar.
